Which Humidifier is Best For Baby?
Looking for the Best Humidifiers for Baby’s room? When your baby gets a stuffy nose, a cough or dry itchy skin, many Moms and medical professionals recommend a humidifier for their room.
In winter months, it is not uncommon for babies to get what appears to be a cold, or they seem to scratch at their skin more often than they do in summer months.
Why is this?
Quite simply the air in your home is dried out due to the use of your home heating system. Cold air outside and the dry heat inside does not keep baby’s sensitive skin as hydrated, and causes the mucous in their little noses to dry out and stops them up as well. One of the most recommended solutions to this to place a humidifier in the baby’s room to bring the humidity level to a healthier, more comfortable level.
So should you get a Cool Mist Humidifier or Warm Mist Humidifier? Which is better for baby in the nursery? Does it really matter?
Choosing the Best Humidifiers for Baby’s Room
When it comes to an infants room, when a stuffy nose and chest congestion could be an issue, adding moisture to the air can help your little one to breathe easier. Then you too will breathe easier knowing they are getting relief from the congestion. I personally prefer the cool mist, but the warm mist is quite popular too.
I went looking for a more reliable opinion than my own on the cool vs. warm mist humidifier question, and found this article by Rod Moser, PA, Phd on WebMd.com. The article states that either cool or warm is fine to use in baby’s room, but care must be taken to use both options properly.
The cool mist humidifier should not be placed too close to baby’s face, but should be placed at a safe distance from the crib or bassinet. It can tend to make the room feel more chilly than the rest of the house, and be sure you don’t place it too close to furniture or walls that are susceptible to moisture.
The same holds true for the warm mist humidifiers or vaporizers, as the steam emitted from the unit if placed too close can potentially burn baby’s sensitive skin if they are curious and can reach the unit from the crib. The warm steam style humidifier or vaporizer as they are also known, may not make the room feel quite so chilly as the cool mist does.
Humidifiers can also grow mold, so they need to be cleaned thoroughly and often to ensure you are not spreading spores that can lead to other health problems.
